America's Credit Unions: Secure and Strong

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, signed into law on October 3, 2008, increased the insurance coverage on all accounts up to $250,000 through December 31, 2009.

What is the NCUSIF insurance amount?

o    Properly established member accounts in federally insured credit unions are insured up to the Standard Maximum Share Insurance Amount (SMSIA). The basic insurance amount is $250,000 per individual account holder, per federally insured credit union. This includes principal and posted dividends up to a total of $250,000. Joint account holders are insured up to $250,000 per joint account holder, per federally insured credit union. For example, an account with two joint account holders is insured for $500,000 separately from the holders’ individual accounts. This includes principal and posted dividends. IRA and KEOGH accounts are insured, separate from other accounts, up to $250,000 per institution, including principal and posted dividends.

For more information on federal share insurance, see the NCUA site at  http://www.ncua.gov/ShareInsurance/Index.htm

NOTICE TO MEMBERS: From time to time you may wish to initiate funds transfers (payment orders) from your account at Wichita Federal Credit Union. In order to safeguard the security of our member accounts with regard to payment orders, we will require a password when:

·         You request any payment order over $2,500 from one account of yours to another account of yours;

·         You wire out funds in any amount from your account;

·         You transfer funds in any amount from an account of yours to an account on which you are not a joint owner;

·         Any time we question the validity of the person requesting the transfer.

In certain circumstances, we will require a callback to a secure phone number to verify a wire transfer request. A secure number will be the phone number on file at the Credit Union. If you change your phone number, that new phone number will not be considered secure until it has been in our system for 30 days. You will be receiving a form with your July statement to set up your password. Please complete these forms and return them to Wichita Federal Credit Union.

Phishing scams continue to affect credit unions, but the styles of phishing are shifting. Vishing, Smishing, and U.S. Mail Phishing are new ways to bait members into divulging personal and financial information. Scammers are turning to these different methods with the hope of confusing members into thinking they can only be “phished” through the use of e-mail.

E-MAIL “PHISHING”
Phishing (pronounced "fishing") is a scam to steal valuable information such as credit card and Social Security numbers, user IDs, and passwords. In phishing, also known as "brand spoofing," an official-looking e-mail is sent to potential victims pretending to be from their ISP, credit union, bank, or retail establishment. E-mails can be sent to people on selected lists or on any list, and the scammers expect some percentage of recipients will actually have an account with the real organization.

LAND LINE TELEPHONE “VISHING” & VoIP (INTERNET PHONES “VISHING”)
Vishing, (Voice phISHING) also called "VoIP phishing for the Internet phones," is the voice counterpart to phishing. Instead of being directed by e-mail to a Web site, an e-mail message asks the user to make a telephone call. The call triggers a voice response system that asks for the user's card number or other personal or financial information. The initial bait can also be a telephone call with a recording that instructs the user to phone an 800 number or another area code within or outside of the United States.

In either case, because people are used to entering card numbers over the phone, this technique can be effective. Voice over IP (VoIP) is used for vishing because caller IDs can be spoofed and the entire operation can be brought up and taken down in a short time, compared to a land line telephone.

TEXT MESSAGE “SMISHING”
Smishing (SMS phISHING) is the mobile phone counterpart to phishing. Instead of being directed by e-mail to a Web site, a text message is sent to the user's cell phone or other mobile device with some ploy to click on a link. The link causes a Trojan to be installed in the cell phone or other mobile device.

New!  Mail LETTER “PHISHING”
This new scam occurs where the phisher is creating a letter and sending it through the mail to individuals to respond to the letter by calling a phone number. The phisher outlines in the letter that the individual must respond for their own protection. This scam is used in conjunction with other channels to steal valuable personal and financial information of the individual receiving the letter.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Wichita Federal Credit Union exists to provide quality financial service for our members, utilizing professional management policies and procedures.

Our field of membership now includes all persons who live, work, worship, or attend school in, and businesses and other legal entities located within Sedgwick County, Kansas, members of their immediate families, and organizations of such persons. As always, this includes City of Wichita employees. Once a member, always a member.

WHAT IS A CREDIT UNION?

A credit union is a cooperative financial institution, owned and controlled by the people who use its services. These people are members. Credit unions serve groups that share something in common, such as where they work, live, or go to church. Credit unions are not-for-profit, and exist to provide a safe, convenient place for members to save money and to get loans at reasonable rates.

Credit unions, like other financial institutions, are closely regulated. And they operate in a very prudent manner. The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, administered by the National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the federal government, insures deposits of credit union members at more than 12,000 federal and state-chartered credit unions nationwide. Your savings are federally insured to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration.

What makes a credit union different from a bank or savings & loan? Like credit unions, these financial institutions accept deposits and make loans--but unlike credit unions, they are in business to make a profit. Banks and savings & loans are owned by groups of stockholders whose interests include earning a healthy return on their investments.
